Level 3: Permanent Color

Permanent hair color products give your hair naturally rich or luminously fashionable shades.  They cover grey perfectly and permanently.  They can also lighten your hair (for blond shades, see Lightening).  With permanent color, your possibilities are practically limitless.

These products also contain special care ingredients, such as fortifying vitamins and keratin proteins.

How to recognize them: The package always contains at least two components.  You must first mix the two before applying the color.  Once mixed, products must be applied immediately.

Here’s how they work:
Step 1: An alkalizing agent (ammonia or monoethanolamine) does the preliminary work:  It causes hair to expand slightly so that the ingredients and colorants can easily penetrate the hair.
Step 2: The oxidative agents (hydrogen peroxide) are mixed with the colorants.  The tiny preliminary colorants penetrate into hair’s inner cortex.  There they react with the oxidative agents.
Step 3: This chemical reaction causes the tiny preliminary particles to grow into large colorant molecules.  These are now so large that they cannot leave the hair interior.  Caring products smooth the hair surface again, making your new color shine brilliantly.

This group of hair color products is also called oxidative hair color. The colors last permanently, because the color molecules are sealed in the hair interior.

Intensifying Toners
They allow a considerable color change in any direction.  They can lighten hair up to three shades.  They also can reliably cover a moderate degree of grey.  At the same time, hair is given intense conditioning.

Hair Color
